Patient Story: Caroline Long

Caroline Laur Long knew the importance of scheduling a mammogram, but typically found herself dreading the procedure because her previous experiences were painful and unpleasant. After consulting her gynecologist, Caroline scheduled a mammogram at Durham Regional Hospital. From the moment she entered the facility, she felt welcomed. The staff was there to meet her needs and answer any questions she had.

“Other facilities made me feel like I was just a number,” says Caroline. “The staff at Durham Regional made me feel like I was a person. They really took the time to explain the procedure from start to finish and explain why certain parts may make me feel uncomfortable.”

While undergoing her mammogram, Caroline was also impressed by the way the entire staff worked together to enhance each individual patient’s experience, including her own. “One of the technologists explained to me that everything at Durham Regional is a team effort,” says Caroline. “I appreciate that outlook, whether it’s for a simple screening or something more advanced. I’m so glad I’ve found a facility where I feel listened to as a patient and involved in my own care.”
