Durham, NC – Durham Regional Hospital is ranked fifth in North Carolina out of 147 hospitals and is recognized among the best hospitals in the Piedmont region, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings. Additionally, Durham Regional Hospital is ranked third out of 19 hospitals in the Raleigh-Durham metro area, an area covering Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill.
Durham Regional was also named a high performer in the following areas:
- Diabetes & Endocrinology
- Neurology & Neurosurgery
“Being recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings is a tribute to our hardworking, experienced employees and physicians who provide top-quality care every day,” says Kerry Watson, president of Durham Regional Hospital. “It demonstrates the great strides we are making to become the best community hospital in North Carolina.”
The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, are a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”
Hospitals are ranked based on patient survival rates, patient safety, reputation (according to physicians), nurse staffing, technology and other measures related to quality of care.
The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.
